History of the Pumi
The name Pumi is believed to be derived from another Hungarian herding breed, the Puli. The two are closely related, along with the Mudi and were not separated into distinctive breeds until the 1930s. Their history is debated, although it is believed they have existed since the 17th or 18th century and descend from crosses that likely included the Puli, German Spitz, Briard and several terriers.
