Grand Fauve de Bretagne
The Grand Fauve de Bretagne was a large, smooth coated scenthound developed to hunt wolves in packs. It originated in the Bretagne region of France and was once a favorite of Charles the IX. However, once the wolves were destroyed most large pack hounds fell out of favor and by 1870s few Grand Fauve de Bretagnes were left.
Local breeders took the remaining Grand Fauve de Bretagnes and bred them with the Briquet Griffon Vendéen, which created the modern Griffon Fauve de Bretagne. The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is smaller than it's ancestor, but similar coloring, although it shares a wiry coat with the Briquet Griffon Vendéen.
