History of the Phu Quoc Ridgeback
The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is native to the Phu Quoc Island that lays in Vietnam’s southern province of Klen Giang. Currently, it is not known how these dogs arrived on the island, or how long they have inhabited it for. As a primitive breed it is likely they have existed there for centuries.
It is important to note that the only recognized breeds that have a ridged coat are the Thai Ridgeback of Thailand and the Rhodesian Ridgeback of Africa. There are two other breeds besides the Phu Quoc Ridgeback that remain unrecognized with the same traits; the Africanis of South Africa and the Combai of India. It has been greatly disputed as to whether or not these breeds are related (and which came first if they are) or if this genetic mutation has simply occurred in various geographic locations.
