History of the Irish Terrier
While the Irish Terrier is believed to be one of the oldest of all terrier breeds its history is unknown and greatly debated. Some believe that it is the ancestor to all other Irish terriers, while others will state that its ancestor is a cross between the old black and tan terriers of England and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. It is known to date back to at least the 1700s, where images of today’s dog can be found in paintings. Once among the most popular of breeds, the numbers of the Irish Terrier have declined to the point that it is listed among the Kennel Club’s Vulnerable Native Breeds.
