History of the Boykin Spaniel
Unlike many breeds, the history of the Boykin Spaniel is fairly documented. In the early 1900s a stray brown spaniel was found outside a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Alexander White took the dog home and later took the dog hunting with his retrievers. To his surprise it outclassed his other dogs, so he sent him to Boykin for training. In turn he became an excellent turkey dog and was later crossed by Boykin with other breeds to eventually produce today’s dog. It is believed these crosses included the American Cocker, English Springer, and American Water Spaniels, as well as the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
