History of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Eduard Korthals began developing the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon in 1873 in the Netherlands. He began the line with a grey and brown wirehaired bitch he purchased in Amsterdam and five other dogs. Many guesses have been made to the breeds of these dogs, including French and German Pointers, spaniels, Barbets, and setters, but it is entirely possible that these dogs themselves were mixed breeds. After an argument with his father he went onto Germany and continued developing his breed there. In 1890 he was awarded a medal by the German emperor for his breeding success. However, even after this achievement he moved to France and continued to refine the breed. This last move has caused some to state France as being the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon’s country of origin.
