American Kennel Club
The American Kennel Club (AKC) is the oldest dog registry in the United States and was formed in 1884 by 13 breed clubs (10 American and 3 Canadian). Two years later the Canadian clubs would leave the group due to disagreements and form their own Canadian Kennel Club (CKC).
Unlike The Kennel Club (KC), the AKC is made up of smaller breed clubs that join the larger club individually. They are not part of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) , but do have an agreement with the KC and CKC to recognize each other’s registries.
Aside from conformation the AKC also sanctions events such as obedience, tracking, agility, rally, and several field/performance trials to test working ability.
As of 2014 the AKC recognizes 178 breeds of dog, which are divided into seven breed groups:
Herding
Hound
Non-Sporting
Sporting
Terrier
Toy
Working
Additionally there is the Miscellaneous Class for breeds that have not obtained full recognition and their Foundation Stock Service registry for dogs that are working towards recognition.
