History of the German Wirehaired Pointer
The German Wirehaired Pointer originates in Germany and is closely related to the other German Pointers, the Longhaired, Shorthair and in particular, the Rough Haired. In the 19th century there were several versions of rough and wire coated gundogs in Germany. No care had been taken to breed them true, as hunters were more interested in their ability in the field. During the second half of the century efforts were being made to separate them into individual breeds, but this type in particular was not popular. They became almost extinct, but were saved by a local breeder in 1865. Many breeds have been suggested in their makeup, from a simple Airedale Terrier and German Shorthair Pointer cross to several other complex suggestions. These breeds include the German Short and Rough Haired Pointers, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, and Pudelpointer among others.
