History of the Ca de Bou
The Ca de Bou originates from the Balearic Islands, the largest of these being Majorca. Their ancestors are a mixture of Spanish mastiffs brought from the mainland that were mainly used for hunting. When the English took over the Balearics in 1713 English breeds were bred to the Spanish mastiffs to produce an improved dog for bullbaiting. Dogs similar to today’s breed were established by the 19th century and when bullbaiting was outlawed in 1883 they came close to extinction but were saved by Spanish mainland breeders.
