The Bavarian Mountain Hound one of the German schweisshunds or 'bloodhounds', a generic term for any dog that has been breed to follow a bloodtrail. When large game, such as deer, are wounded during a hunt it is the schweisshunds that are employed to find them, for the honor code of German hunter requires them to be found - dead or alive. These dogs can track cold trails hours old and for miles, possibly continuing for days until the animal is found.

History of the Bavarian Mountain Hound

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a scenthound that was developed in Germany. The state that shares their name is in the south, near the Austrian and Swiss borders and is part of the Bavarian Alps. They are very similar to another German breed, the Hanoverian Hound, only smaller and shorter in the leg. There ancestry is likely crosses between the older Hanoverian and the Tyrolean Hound of Austria.
