History of the Swedish Lapphund
The Swedish Lapphund was traditionally kept by the Sami people (indigenous to parts of Finland, Sweden and Russia). An ancient breed, it is thought that they have existed for centuries among the Sami and may be an early descended of the Samoyed. They are a close relative to the Finnish Lapphund and were once considered the same breed. It was not until they became part of the show ring that they were separated. There are still minor differences between the two, but as the Swedes preferred solid and dark colors and the Finns desired more patterns the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) decided it was best to separate them, thus allowing each country to preside over their own dog.
