Tosa Japan’s Fierce Warrior The Tosa is a breed of dog from Japan. They were originally used for dog fighting, and unfortunately are still used illegally for this. However, the Tosa has now also found its way into homes as a companion dog as well. Tosas stand between 24-26 inches at the withers, Japanese dogs normally weigh between 66-88 pounds, but non-Japanese breed The development of the Tosa began in the second half of the 19th century. Dog fighting was popular in Japan, and the native Shikoku was known as a fierce competitor in fights. With the arrival of the Europeans, however, other dogs were crossed with the breed to compete with Europe’s dogs. Known dogs that were added to the breed include the Bulldog, Mastiff, St. Bernard, German Pointer, Great Dane, and Bull Terrier. WWII almost saw the destruction of the breed, between war and dog fighting becoming illegal, as well as the feeding of the dogs themselves, the breed faced extinction. A few breeders smuggled the last remaining Tosa dogs to a Northern Japan island and hid them until the end of the war. The Tosa generally makes a good companion, however due to their size and history is not recommended for an inexperienced dog owner. They should be socialized at a young age, as they can be aggressive towards other dogs, and nervous around strangers. Generally they do well with children, especially ones in their family. They are quite loyal dogs and protective of the home and household. Other pets that they have been raised with since puppy hood will pose no problems. The Tosa requires a dedicated and strong willed owner. |
