History of the Braque Du Bourbonnais
The Braque du Bourbonnais was mentioned French literature in the late 1500s and is believed to have been descended from the old Spainish Pointer. Never an extremely popular breed, they suffered a heavy blow in the 1930s when breeders attempted to create a stricter standard. They wanted a dog that was born tailless and had a specific color pattern known as faded lilac, which was white covered by fine lines. Any dogs not born to these standards were not bred and with numbers already low the breed faced near extinction after WWI. It was not until the 1970s, when Michel Comte started looking for dogs of this type that the breed was recreated. He was unable to find any pure specimens, but through careful breeding today’s Braque du Bourbonnais is nearly identical to the one of the past.
