Worldly Dogs A History of Dog Breeds Worldwide Welcome to Worldly Dogs, a site that focuses on the history of dog breeds from around the world. Humans have shaped the evolution of the dog for centuries, in many cases replacing natural selection. Only the dog has such a wide genetic variety within their species, from the tiny Chihuahua to the towering Irish Wolfhound. Dogs come from every corner of the world, and each breed has its own history accompanied with it. Some dog breeds, such as the Shih Tzu seem to have always been simply companions to their human masters, but most at one point in history had to work for the food in their bowls. These dogs were developed and raised with a single task in mind, such as those used for livestock. Border Collies and Australian Cattle Dogs have been bred to herd and control anything from sheep to cattle, while livestock guardians such as the Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd live with their flocks, protecting them from thieves and predators. Countless breeds were developed for the sole purpose of hunting, which includes retrievers, like the Golden and Labrador, spaniels, such as the Cocker and Springer, and setters, which include the Gordon and Irish. One cannot forget the faithful hounds in the hunting category, the Beagle and Bloodhound are both example of scenthounds, while the Greyhound and Saluki are categorized as sighthounds. These are only a tiny sample of the wide range of dog breeds that were once (and still are) used on the hunt. Here you will find the unique history of each breed such as the more recent creations, including the American Eskimo and Jack Russell Terrier, and those that have existed alongside man for so long their creation has been lost throughout the pages of history. These ancient dog breeds include the Basenji, Chow Chow, and Samoyed. Along with the history, Worldly Dogs has information on temperament, health, and care for each breed. Our site is easy to navigate, either by country of origin, or alphabetically.
