History of the Scottish Deerhound
Throughout the centuries the Scottish Deerhound has been known by many names including Fleethound, Rough Greyhound and Highland Greyhound. Large, shaggy greyhounds have been known in Scotland for at least 500 years, and in their early history the Scottish Deerhound runs parallel with their close cousin, the Irish Wolfhound. Two events brought a large decline to the breed’s numbers - the clan collapse in 1746 caused the loss of their traditional homes and the arrival of efficient firearms in the Highlands lessened the need for their talents. Their numbers dwindled until they found favor with breeders (Duncan McNeil in particular) and began appearing in the show ring. This stabilized the breeding pool, but their overall count has remained low. Today the Scottish Deerhound is listed on the Kennel Club’s Vulnerable Native Breeds.
