History of the Hovawart
The Hovawart originated in Germany, with their earliest reference dating back to 1220. The breed fell into decline after the World Wars and it was saved by a breeding effort led by Kurt Konig. It is said that he acquired farm dogs from the Harz Mountains and Black Forest to use as his foundation stock. Others claim there were no dogs left by the time he began breeding and today’s dog is a recreation that consists of Leonbergers, German Shepherd Dogs, Newfoundlands and Kuvasz.
