Shikoku Inu A Rare and Ancient Breed The Shikoku Inu is a breed of dog that is native to Japan. Similar to the Shiba Inu in appearance, this is a primitive breed from the Shikoku Island. The Shikoku Inu is little known outside its native Japan. Shikoku Inus stand b Some believe the Shikoku Inu is a descendent of the Japanese Wolf, although there is no evidence to support this. There is no doubt that it is an ancient breed, and having been isolated on an island it has been pure for centuries. Originally used for hunting deer and boar in the mountains, although throughout the years this breed has become increasingly less common. The Shikoku Inu was also used for dog fighting as well, and was one of the major breeds used in the development of the Tosa. In 1937 the breed was recognized as one of Japan’s living treasures, but the breed is not very popular in its native lands. Relatively unknown outside of Japan, there is a chance that this breed will be lost to us forever. The Shikoku Inu is recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The Shikoku Inu is an intelligent and loyal breed. Somewhat less stubborn then their other Japanese “cousins” some owners prefer them to the other breeds, but they can still be a relentless breed. They generally get along well with children, but may have aggression towards other dogs. This is not a breed that can be left with other household pets, as they have a very strong prey drive, and any smaller animal will be seen as prey. Socialization while a Shikoku Inu is still young is a must. |
