Mastiff

The Old English Mastiff

The Mastiff is an ancient breed of dog that originated in the United Kingdom.  Overtime the Mastiff bloodline has contributed to numerous breeds worldwide.

Appearance

Mastiffs are large, heavy, muscular dogs that weigh in anywhere from 175-190 pounds and stand between 27-30 inches tall.  They have a short coat that comes in shades of fawn, brindle, silver, and apricot.  Mastiffs have a black mask on the muzzle, ears, and around their eyes and nose.

History

The Mastiff is an old breed, possibly descended from the Alaunt.  Their name most likely is derived from the Anglo-Saxton word “masty”, which means powerful.  Already present in Britain during the Roman invasion in 43 AD, and is thought to have been brought by Phoenician traders as early as 6th century BC.  They fought besides their masters during the invasion, and recognizing the breed’s strength, the Romans took them back with them to Rome, where they took part in gladiatorial contests against bulls, lions, and bears.  Traditionally they were kept as guard dogs and military dogs, as well as used in dogfights.  After WWII the breed was almost eliminated in its homeland, but was revived with imported stock.  Today, although not rare, the Mastiff is still an uncommonly found breed.

Temperament

Generally calm and gentle with their family, Mastiffs were bred as guards and will defend its territory and family.  They do well with children, but their size can be a problem around toddlers.  If not socialized at a young age it can be aggressive towards other dogs.  Mastiffs can be difficult to train, and must start obedience while they are young and before they become too large to handle.

Health and Care

Mastiffs tend to live between 9-11 years.  They are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloating, obesity, and heart disease.

While the Mastiff can live in an apartment they do best with at least a small yard.  They are inactive indoors and can easily become lazy.  They need a daily walk to keep them fit and stimulated.

The Mastiff’s short coat requires little grooming, and they are average shedders.
