Tibetan Spaniel Little Lion The Tibetan Spaniel is a breed of companion dog that originates from Tibet, China. Small monastery dogs would loyally trail behind their Lama masters and became known as “little Lions”. These little Lions would become today’s Tibetan Spaniel. Tibetan Spaniels stand at 10 inches and weigh between 9-15 pounds. They are not true spaniels, and look a bit like a Pekingese, but have longer faces and less fur. Their coat is soft, silky, and of me Originating in Tibet the Tibetan Spaniel was once kept in monasteries. They would often sit on the high walls and bark at the sign of intruders. It has also been said that they would turn prayer wheels for their masters. These little dogs were often given as gifts to royal houses throughout Asia. It is likely other breeds we know today contributed to the development of the breeds, such as the Pekingese, Japanese Chin, and Pug. The Tibetan Spaniel was not brought to England until the late 1800s, and did not receive American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition until 1984. Tibetan Spaniels are friendly companion dogs that make excellent pets. They are also good watchdogs and enjoy keeping watch from high places as their ancestors did. Because of their background they tend to be weary of strangers and protective of their families. They are a loyal pet and generally do well with children, although it is recommended they are older children do to their size. An intelligent and independent breed, the Tibetan Spaniel can sometimes be difficult to train. |
