History of the Samoyed
The Samoyed is an ancient breed that was kept by the Samoyede people of northern Siberia. Having bred true in isolation for centuries it is believed they are one of the oldest surviving breeds. In the 19th century the Samoyed was introduced to Europe when fur traders and explorers began bringing a small number of dogs back to England with them. They were instantly popular with show breeders and the modern breed has descended from roughly a dozen dogs.
