Pug The Playful Companion The Pug is a small toy dog that originates from China. These little companion dogs were once kept by Tibetan monks for many years. The phrase “multum in parvo” Pugs stand at 10-14 inches and weigh between 13-20 pounds. They are square and compact, with squished faces that have distinct wrinkles on their foreheads. Their fur is short and can be apricot, fawn, black, or sliver, with black muzzles. The Tail on a Pug curls tightly and ideally will even have a double curl that lies on the back. It has been believed that the Pug originated before 400 BC in China. However during recent DNA testing the breed was not found to be as old as several other Chinese breeds, such as the Chow Chow, Tibetan Terrier, and Shih Tzu. Some believe that it was in fact developed from short-haired Pekingese, which is an older breed. Despite the many theories that exist to the exact origin it is known that the Pug was kept in the Tibetan monasteries and from there made its way to Japan. Later it found its way to Europe, where it even became the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland for saving a prince’s life in 1572. This breed was also used by Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, to sneak letters to husband while she was imprisoned. The messages were hidden under its collar. By 1885 the Pug was registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Pugs are loyal and affectionate companions. They are playful throughout their lives, and crave attention from their owners. They get along well with other pets and children. Being intelligent they can bore easily, and a Pug that is ignored by its owner will become jealous of whatever is taking their attention away. |
