Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog
“Cousin” of the Australian Cattle Dog At first glance, one could think the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is simply an Australian Cattle Dog with a docked tail, however they are two entirely different breeds. The most obvious difference is of course their tails, but, despite the likeness in their appearance, the two are genetically quite distinct. While both are herding dogs, the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog's lineage is entirely its own. The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog descended from the Smithfield, a black and white rough coated, bobtail, which originally came from England. The Smithfield was used for herding, but did not do well in Australia's conditions. To help "cure" this problem they were crossed with the Dingo, and later the Smooth Coated Collie was also added to the gene pool. In time the Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was developed and is known today as the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs are also more square than the Australian Cattle Dog, and their ears are wider apart and set higher on their heads than the Australian Cattle Dog. They are either red speckled with darker red markings on their head or blue speckled with black markings on the head. Tan is not permitted in their colorings. Their coat is short, dense, and course, while the tail on the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog should not be longer than four inches. The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog does not do well with apartment life and, at the very least, need a yard to have room to run. Exercise and stimulation is a must, without proper stimulation they can become destructive. Due to their herding instinct they may try to "herd" their humans, if there are no other suitable charges. Generally they get along well with children they know. Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs are very attentive to their owners' commands, and are fairly easy to train. Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs are generally very healthy, as they are a hardy breed. However, some Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs may suffer from hereditary deafness and may develop eye problems. |
