The Smooth Fox Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in England. Closely related to its ‘cousin’ the Wire Fox Terrier, the two were once classified as the same breed.
Smooth Fox Terriers are medium sized dogs that stand at 14-16 inches and weigh in at 16-18 pounds. They have V-shaped ears that drop forward, close to their cheeks. In countries where it is still allowed their tails are docked to leave three quarters the original length. The Smooth Fox Terrier’s coat is short, flat and smooth; it is predominantly white with black and/or brown markings.

Traditionally all dogs that were bred to bolt foxes were known as fox terriers. The Smooth Fox Terrier is thought to have developed in the 1700s from the extinct Black and Tan Terrier with additions of Bull Terrier, Greyhound, Beagle, and extinct English White Terrier at various times in its history. When it first entered the show ring no distinction was made between the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers; they were both considered to be the same breed and were interbreed for many generations. Although it is now believed that their ancestry is not shared the continual breeding (which was discontinued in the mid-1980s) has resulted in two breeds that are almost identical save for coat type.


Smooth Fox Terriers are enthusiastic and playful dogs that bond well with their owners. They get along best with older children and other dogs, provided they have been properly socialized. Dogs that are not socialized can have dominance and aggression issues. Due to their background they are not recommended for homes with non-canine pets. This breed is highly active and does best with a family that can meet that lifestyle. They are intelligent, but some Smooth Fox Terriers can be difficult to train.
The average lifespan of a Smooth Fox Terrier is 13-14 years. They are prone to deafness, eye disorders and luxating pattela.

This breed can adapt to apartment life provided they are regularly exercised. They should not be let off leash unless they are in a secure area as they are prone to chase.

The short coat of a Smooth Fox Terrier requires very little care. They are average shedders.
