Peruvian Hairless Dog

Perro Sin Pelo del Peru

The Peruvian Hairless Dog is an ancient breed from the South American country of Peru.  It is often believed that they are an Incan dog; however they were also kept as pets before the Inca as well.  Ceramic figures resembling the Peruvian Hairless Dog have been found from other cultures including the Chimu, Moche, and Vicus.

The exact origin of the Peruvian Hairless Dog is greatly debated; some believe it to have descended from the hairless dog of Mexico, the Xoloitzcuintli.  Others say they were brought to the Americas 2,000-3,000 years ago across the Bering Strait during the Asian migration.  It is believed that they have existed since at least 750 A.D.  In recent years the Peruvian Hairless dog has been recognized as a breed and is well known throughout the United States as the Peruvian Inca Orchid.

The Peruvian Hairless Dog is, of course, a hairless breed.  They may have short hair on the top of its head, on the feet, and the tip of its tail.  In Peru it is preferred that the dog is completely hairless.  Skin colors can range from chocolate, grey, copper, and mottled.  There are three sizes to this breed, miniature – 10-16 inches, Medium – 16-20 inches, and Large – 20-26 inches.  The smallest Peruvian Hairless Dogs may weigh as little as 9lbs and the largest weigh in at 55lbs.

Peruvian Hairless Dogs are smart, independent, and quick learners.  They are very loyal, good with children, and in general get along well with other dogs.  This is not a breed that can be left alone for long periods of time, as they enjoy being with their owners.  The Peruvian Hairless Dog is generally not a good dog for beginners, or someone who will not have enough time for it.

The lack of hair on the Peruvian Hairless Dog makes them clean, and of course they are naturally free from fleas and most parasites.  However, because of the nonexistent hair care must be taken to its skin, many dogs will experience acne, and if the skin becomes too dry it must be treated with a pet friendly moisturizing cream.  Dogs with light colored skin are prone to sunburns.  Some, and more often smaller, Peruvian Inca Orchids are prone to the cold.
