Mountain Cur

Hunter of the Mountains

            The Mountain Cur is a working dog that was developed in the United States.  It is mainly bred in the States of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee.  The Mountain Cur has been a recognized breed by the United Kennel Club (UKC) since 1998.

            Mountain Curs, like all curs were and are bred fro their working ability.  Because of this their appearance can vary from dog to dog.  They are a stocky, rugged breed, and their short coat can range in color from yellow, brindle, black, or brindle with black.  The breed often has white points, and about half are born with bob-tails.  Mountain Curs stand between 18-26 inches and weigh between 30-60 pounds. 

            The history of the Mountain Cur is shared with that of all curs; they are the hunting dogs of the southern States.  Emigrants to the United States often brought their dogs with them, and these breeds where most often hounds and terriers used for hunting.  These breeds were crossed with native dogs, and in time this created the cur.  Hounds gave them their scenting abilities, and bays, while the terriers gave them boldness and a strong tenacity on the hunt and off.  Some shepherd dogs were also added to the mix, and curs can be used with rough stock, such as longhorn cattle and feral pigs.  Many curs are still considered a type of dog rather than a breed, but like the Mountain Cur some have gained UKC recognition.

             As a working dog the Mountain Cur is not happy with city life.  A hunting dog, they are usually used for treeing squirrel and raccoon, although they will hunt larger prey as well.  They are loyal towards their family and have the desire to please their family.  A highly protective dog, they will stand their ground even against a bear if they or their master is threatened.
