Malinois The Shorthaired Belgian Shepherd Dog The Malinois is one of four types of dogs from Belgium known as Belgian Shepherd Dogs, the other three being the Groenendael, Laekenois, and Tervuren. The Malinois was the first of these four to become an established type, with its standards become the basis towards the other three. Appearance
Malinois are a medium sized breed, standing between 22-26 inches and weighing in at 61-63 pounds. Often breed for its working abilities rather than appearance, the short coat can range in colors from gray to fawn to red, but always with a black mask and ears. Many of these colors and patterns are also common in the Tervuren, however this “cousin” has a long coat instead of the short found on the Malinois. History The Malinois shares most of its history alongside the other Belgian Shepherd Dogs. They originated from the area of Malines, which is from where they get their name. Today the Malinois remains quite rare in the United States, even though the American Kennel Club (AKC) has recognized it since the early 1900s. After the Laekenois it is the least popular of the Belgians, but in its homeland it is a breed that thrives. Although originally used with livestock, the breed has become quite resourceful, and is now used in a range of working environments. Police forces worldwide are using them in increasing numbers for security and detection work. The Malinois is also an ideal breed for Schutzhund trials. *For information on temperament, health, and care, see Groenendael. |
