Jindo
Korea’s Hunting Dog The Jindo is a breed of hunting dog that originates from the Korean Island of Jindo. Relatively unknown outside of Korea, the Jindo dog is slowly finding fanciers in the United States. Jindos are a medium sized breed that stands between 16-25 inches and weigh between 25-50 pounds. They are a spitz-type dog, having prick ears and a tail that is carried in a sickle position or curls and laid along their back. They have a medium length, double coat, with only white and red colors being recognized by Korean law. The United Kennel Club (UKC) recognizes white, fawn, gray, black/tan, and brindle. Other colors besides the ones Korea law recognizes still exist on Jindo Island, including black, black/tan, and red/white. It is believed that the Jindo was developed by crossing the native Korean dogs with dogs brought by the Mongols during the 13th century. The Mongols invaded Korea and were at one point some soldiers ended up on Jindo Island. The dogs became isolated there and developed into a pure strain. Only the strongest dogs survived, and for centuries the dogs were unknown off the island. Originally the dogs were used for hunting and as guard dogs on farms. In 1962 the breed was recognized as a national monument. It is prohibited to export them out of Korea, but emigrants have been bringing them with them to the United States since 1980s. The Jindo was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1998. Jindos are primitive dogs; therefore they are highly independent and strong willed. They love to roam and do not do well in small yards or apartments. This breed is highly protective and loyal to their family and territory. The Jindo is not a breed for inexperienced dog owners; they need a strong and firm hand. Early socialization is a must, it is important to introduce pups to strangers, dogs, cats, and children. They have a high prey drive and cannot be trusted around smaller animals. The Jindo can be a difficult animal to train, unfortunately this leads to many being abandoned in the United States. |
