![]() English Toy Spaniel King Charles Spaniel The English Toy Spaniel is a breed of dog that was developed in England. These little dogs are named after those that were favored by King Charles II, and outside the United States they are still known as the King Charles Spaniel. Appearance
English Toy Spaniels are small and compact; they are 10-11 inches tall and weigh 8-14 pounds. They have a short-nose, and long feathered ears, in the United States their tails are customarily docked. Their coat is soft, silky, and well feathered. There are four different coat colors, and at one point they were each considered a separate breed, the black and tan (King Charles), Tricolor of white, tan, and black (Prince Charles), red and white (Blenheim), and mahogany red (Ruby). The American Kennel Club (AKC) judges the English Toy Spaniel in two classes, based on color, the Blenheim and Prince Charles are one class and the Ruby and King Charles as the other. History
Although named after King Charles II there is no evidence that the English Toy Spaniel of today actually descended from his dogs. It was said that he spent more time with his dogs than affairs of the state. Small spaniel dogs were being selectively breed in England by the 1600s, although it is likely that their ancestors came from Asia, perhaps China or Japan. Crosses that possibly included the Japanese Chin or Pug may have resulted in the shorted nose, as well as the smaller dogs. In the early 1900s the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was developed, this breed is said to actually be closer in appearance than the English Toy Spaniel to the original dogs kept by King Charles II. Temperament
Sometimes a timid breed, the English Toy Spaniel is generally a happy, playful, and loving companion. They get along well with other dogs and pets, and thrive with human companionship. Most English Toy Spaniels do well with children, especially if they are older. Health and Care
English Toy Spaniels tend to live between 11-12 years. They suffer from genetic defects such are heart, ear, and eye problems, patellar luxation, their short faces may cause them to sneeze and snore. A small breed, the English Toy Spaniel does well in an apartment. They need to be taken on daily walks, and enjoy play. Care should be taken in extreme heat, as the breed can overheat because of their shortened snout. English Toy Spaniels are average shedders, their coat doesn’t need to be trimmed, but should be brushed regularly. |
