Brussels Griffon Griffon Bruxellois The Brussels Griffon is a breed of toy dog originating from Belgium. It is one of three types of Griffons, the other two being the Belgian Griffon and Petit Branbancon. It is a more common name for the breeds in the United States, where they are all judged under one slandered. In some other countries each “type” is classified separately. Appearance
Brussels Griffons stand between 7-8 inches and weigh between 8-12 pounds. Their coat is rough and harsh to the touch, and longer than the coat of the Belgian Griffon. A solid shade of red is preferred, although black markings on the head are allowed. They have a shortened snout and face with a profuse beard, again, much longer than the Belgians. The tail of the Brussels Griffon is traditionally docked. History
The early history of the Brussels Griffon is shared with the Belgian Griffon, beginning in the early 1800s. Its name is derived from the Belgian town of Brussels, where small terriers called the Griffons d’Ecurie were kept in the stables of coachmen to hunt rats and vermin. Early breeding added the English Toy Spaniel to the line, and later, others were added. These breeds may have included the Dutch Smoushond, Barbet, and it is widely accepted that the Yorkshire Terrier was also added to the bloodline. The Pug was also added, which would lead to the smooth coated Petit Brabancon. * For information on temperament, health, and care, see Belgian Griffon. |
