Border Terrier

Border Terrier

The Border Terrier, as its name suggests, originated in the border country of England and Scotland. They are considered some to be the ancestor of all other terriers, particularly in Great Britain.

Appearance

Border Terriers are small, sturdy dogs that stand between 10-11 inches and weigh in between 11-15 pounds. They have V-shaped ears that drop forward, close to their cheeks and a medium length tail that begins thicker at the base and tapers. Their coat is short, dense and wiry; colors include red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan or wheaten. A dark muzzle on a Border Terrier is often seen and desirable.

History

The Border Terrier originated along the Cheviot Hills of the border country and dates back to at least the 1700s. They have been kept for centuries by border farmers, shepherds and sportsmen as an ideal working terrier. Early farm dogs were used to protect stock and it was essential that they be superb hunters, for they caught their own food to survive. This breed remained small enough to go to ground after foxes, yet also tall enough to keep pace with a horse. Today’s Border Terrier has changed little, both in temperament and appearance from their early form.

Temperament

Border Terriers remain true to their terrier form. They are bold hunters, agile, highly active dogs, and love to dig. This breed gets along well with children and, unlike some terriers, does well with other dogs, but they are not recommended in a home with non-canine pets. It is extremely important that this breed has an outlet for its activity level; a bored Border Terrier can turn destructive.

Health and Care
The average lifespan of a Border Terrier is 13-14 years. They are prone to Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome, hip dysplasia, perthes disease, heart defects, and cataracts.

This breed can adapt to apartment life provided they are regularly exercised. They should not be let off leash unless they are in a secure area as they are prone to chase.

The coat of a Border Terrier requires occasional brushing with a bristle brush. It should be stripped several times per year. They shed little hair.
