Black Russian Terrier
A Military Bred Working Dog The Black Russian Terrier is a breed of dog that was developed in Russia in the 20th century. They were originally developed for the former USSR as a military and working dog. The Black Russian Terrier was not recognized as a breed until 1981. Black Russian Terriers stand between 25-29 inches and weigh between 80-143, with the males being bigger then the females. This is a strong breed and should always appear as such. Their coat is harsh and dense and is between 1.5-4 inches in length, the hairs should form a beard on the eyebrows and face. Black Russian Terriers are always a solid black. In the 1940s the USSR began developing a dog that would later become the Black Russian Terrier. They began the breeding in an army controlled kennel called Red Star and used various breeds to contribute to their project. It is believed somewhere around twenty breeds were used in the development, including the Airedale Terrier, Caucasian Ovcharka, Rottweiler, Newfoundland, Great Dane, Giant and Standard Schnauzers, as well as the now extinct Moscow Water Dog. These dogs were bred solely for working abilities, completely disregarding the dogs’ appearance. In 1957 several pups were sold to civilian breeders, and a standard was formed. Gradually the Black Russian Terrier spread to European countries, and eventually the United States. Black Russian Terriers are an intelligent and loyal breed. Although they can sometimes seem aloof they bond strongly to their family. They can be wary of strangers, and are excellent guard dogs. They will not hesitate if they feel as if their family is threatened. These dogs want to work, and therefore it is recommended they have a clear “job” to do. They excel at obedience, agility, and schutzhund training. They need exercise and a good outlet, or else a Black Russian Terrier can become destructive. |
