Black Mouth Cur

Hunter and Herder

The Black Mouth Cur is a multi-talented dog that originates in the southern United States.  The Black Mouth Cur can be used as a hunting dog, herding dog, or in the case of some dogs, can accomplish both.

Black Mouth Curs are a rugged breed, and coats can range in shades and colors.  Colors can include red, yellow, brindle, fawn, or buckskin.  Rarely solid black or white dogs do occur.  Their coats are short, and may be coarse or fine, and both types often occur in the same litter.  The name “Black Mouth” comes from the dark coloring around the lips and roof of the mouth, the muzzle may or may not also have this coloring.  This is a medium sized dog, and weight on the Black Mouth Cur can range anywhere from 30 to 90 pounds, males generally being larger.

There are several different lines of Black Mouth Curs, and each tends to have different strengths then the others.  These lines include the Ladner Yellow Black Mouth Cur, Red Black Mouth Cur, Wetherford Ben Black Mouth Cur, and the Florida Black Mouth Cur.

The Ladner Black Mouth Curs trace their origin from Mississippi.  These dogs had such extensive history kept by the Ladners that they were accepted into the National Kennel Club (NKC) in 1964.  These dogs are often used for hunting; quarry includes squirrel, raccoon, bobcat, mountain lion, hogs, and bear.  They have also been used for search and rescue services.

Red Black Mouth Curs are believed to have originated in Alabama, though they have found their way to Florida and Tennessee as well.  These were multi-purposed dogs used to hunt, protect the home, and for herding.  This line is still breed in Alabama, and when the Black Mouth Cur was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) it was a Red that was used for their standard photograph.

Wetherford Ben Black Mouth Curs were featured in the book “The Big Thicket Legacy.”  They were developed in Texas and used primarily for herding cattle.  Florida Black Mouth Curs were also used for herding cattle.

The Black Mouth Cur is now found throughout the United States and into Canada.  The Ladner Black Mouth Cur has even found its way to Mexico, Russia, India, and Europe.

The Black Mouth Cur is an excellent hunter, and extremely loyal and protective to their family.  They want nothing more than to please their master, and can be even more protective of children.  The Black Mouth Cur cannot be trusted with non-canine pets.
